Hexagram Overview
Song — Conflict / Litigation
Judgment:
“There is sincerity that becomes obstructed. One must be cautious. Stopping midway brings good fortune; pursuing to the end brings misfortune.”
Song does not arise from innate evil.
It arises when trust exists but can no longer flow.
The upper trigram is Qian (Heaven),
the lower trigram is Kan (Water).
“Heaven and Water move in opposite directions — thus Conflict.”
Heaven seeks to descend;
Water seeks to rise.
Yet the channel of trust between them is blocked.
What could have become harmony turns into contention.
Conflict is not inevitable. It is a rupture that could have been avoided.
I. Segment Image (段象) — Two Structural Domains of Song
🔹 Upper Segment: Tong Ren 同人 (Heaven over Fire)
The upper domain is principled unity.
Heaven above Fire represents shared ideals, public order, and the wish for common ground.
Yet here, Tong Ren does not descend.
Unity exists as principle, not as lived connection.
Authority seeks harmony,
but speaks from above.
🔹 Lower Segment: Huan 涣 (Wind over Water)
The lower domain is dispersion and emotional breakdown.
Wind moves over Water, scattering fear, rumors, and unresolved grievances.
Water below is danger;
Wind disperses rather than gathers.
Thus the people are unsettled,
their sincerity fragmented.

Song forms when:
Unity exists above but cannot reach below, and
Grievance exists below but cannot rise upward.
Conflict is therefore structural, not personal.
Song is born where Tong Ren fails to connect
and Huan fails to gather.
II. Phase Image (节象) — Three Movements of Conflict
🔸 Opening Phase: Wei Ji 未济 (Fire over Water)
Conflict begins in a state of unfinished crossing.
Fire above Water:
clarity exists, but danger remains below.
Trust is attempted,
yet the crossing is incomplete.
This is the moment where conflict is most preventable.
🔸 Turning Phase: Jia Ren 家人 (Wind over Fire)
Conflict enters the inner domain.
Jia Ren is regulation, roles, and domestic order.
Here, disputes are no longer abstract —
they become personal, familial, institutional.
Rules are asserted.
Positions harden.
This is the decisive moment:
correction is still possible, or
estrangement becomes fixed.
🔸 Concluding Phase: Gou 姤 (Heaven over Wind)
At the end, conflict meets sudden encounter.
Heaven above Wind:
authority confronts spreading influence.
What was once grievance becomes public confrontation.
What was once order becomes reaction.
If conflict reaches this phase unchecked,
it no longer educates — it overwhelms.

Song unfolds as:
Unfinished trust
Internal regulation and tension
Sudden collision with authority
Thus the Judgment warns:
Stopping midway brings good fortune.
Because once Gou appears,
withdrawal is no longer gentle.
III. Archetypal Image (经象) — The Fourfold Inner Logic
🔹 Lower Trigram: Kan 坎 (Water)
Danger · Fear · Emotional Depth · Grievance
🔹 Lower Nuclear Trigram: Li 离 (Fire)
Clarity · Consciousness · Moral Awareness
🔹 Upper Nuclear Trigram: Xun 巽 (Wind)

Law · Authority · Principle · Judgment
▶ Archetypal Meaning
Song contains a clear moral vision (Li) within danger (Kan),
yet expression becomes diffused (Xun),
and final authority stands firm above (Qian).
Thus:
the heart knows,
the mouth disperses,
and judgment stands distant.
Conflict is therefore not ignorance,
but clarity unable to pass through structure.
IV. Line Logic — Conflict as a Moral Progression
Although Song contains six lines,
its teaching unfolds as a single ethical arc:
- Withdrawal brings safety
- Retreat preserves innocence
- Holding to old virtue avoids disaster
- Returning to rightful command restores balance
- Central authority resolves conflict with clarity
- Obsession with winning leads to entrapment
The wisdom of Song lies not in winning disputes, but in ending the need for dispute.
V. The Central Judgment — Why Only the Upright Can Judge
At the center stands the ruler-line:
“Song — Supreme Good Fortune.”
This does not praise litigation.
It states that only one who is centered, upright, and impartial may bring conflict to an end.
When judgment is guided by clarity rather than pride,
conflict dissolves instead of escalating.
True authority does not multiply cases —
it prevents them from arising again.
VI. The Highest Teaching — No Conflict Is the True Ideal
Confucius said:
“In hearing lawsuits, I am no different from others. What matters is making litigation unnecessary.”
This echoes the Image of Song:
“The noble one plans affairs at their beginning.”
Punishment is secondary.
Education is primary.
Judgment is remedial.
Harmony is the goal.
The highest justice is not skillful judgment — it is a society where judgment is rarely needed.
Conclusion — The Way of Song Is the Way of Humanity
Song reveals the fragile line between justice and destruction.
It teaches us:
- Trust is the foundation of harmony
- Restraint is the wisdom of survival
- Upright judgment is a sacred responsibility
- Repentance remains possible even at the extreme
- The highest virtue is to prevent conflict before it forms
May we know when to stop, when to yield, and when to judge — so that conflict dissolves before it hardens into fate.
