The SPA Method of the I Ching

Reading a Hexagram Through Its Segments, Phases, and Archetypes

The SPA Method of the I ChingSegments, Phases, and Archetypes—is my way of approaching the inner structure of a hexagram.
It does not claim a classical lineage, yet it follows the same generative rhythm hinted in Laozi’s words:

“The One gives birth to Two;
Two give birth to Three;
Three give birth to the ten thousand things.”

Instead of treating the six lines as a single vertical ladder,
the SPA Method listens to the internal geometry of the hexagram—
how it gathers, turns, and reveals itself from within.

S — Segments: The Hexagram’s Two Structural Poles

Every hexagram consists of two living segments:

  • Lower Segment (Lines 5 → 1):
the root already formed, the ground of experience
  • Upper Segment (Lines 6 → 2):
the movement yet to rise, the unfolding tendency

Each segment contains its own internal nuclear hexagram
two mirrors facing each other, revealing both the hexagram’s origin and its trajectory.

Segments answer the question:

Where does this hexagram stand,
and toward what does it lean?

P — Phases: The Three Movements of Change

The four middle lines form a continuous flow,
and within this flow the hexagram progresses through three phases:

  1. Opening Phase – the first stirrings, like a gate unlatched
  2. Turning Phase – the shift of momentum, the hinge of change
  3. Concluding Phase – the settling of forces, the return to stillness

Each phase corresponds to a unique mutual image (互象),
revealing the dramatic arc of the hexagram—
its rise, its pivot, and its resolution.

Phases answer the question:

How does this hexagram move?
What story does it enact?

A — Archetypes: The Hexagram’s Fourfold Essence

Within every hexagram lies a four-layered archetypal structure:

  1. The Lower Trigram – the ground
  2. The Lower Nuclear Trigram – the seed beneath the ground
  3. The Upper Nuclear Trigram – the seed within the sky
  4. The Upper Trigram – the heavens overhead

Together they form a fourfold archetype,
the underlying energies that shape fortune or misfortune.
These are not symbolic decorations,
but the internal reasoning through which the hexagram becomes itself.

Archetypes answer the question:

What is the hexagram’s essence?
What breathes at its core?

A Living Structural Framework

The SPA Method is not a rediscovered ancient doctrine.
It is a way of seeing—
a way of letting the hexagram reveal its inner pulse.

Through Segments, we understand its position and direction.
Through Phases, we follow its unfolding movement.
Through Archetypes, we grasp its essential pattern.

From Two to Three to the Myriad Things,
a hexagram is not a static symbol but a living structure—
gathering, turning, opening, resolving.

The SPA Method simply illuminates
the architecture already breathing within it.
